How to Replace Broken Earring Hooks Without Damaging Your Jewelry

Earrings are one of the most cherished accessories, but over time, earring hooks can break, tarnish, or become uncomfortable. Instead of discarding your favorite pair, you can easily replace the earring hooks with high-quality options like solid gold, gold-filled, sterling silver, or argentium ear wires. This simple repair can extend the life of your jewelry while keeping it looking elegant.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Earring Hooks

Step 1: Choose the Right Earring Hooks

Select your preferred ones here: gold-filled, sterling silver, solid gold hooks, or argentium.

Step 2: Open the Loop on the Old Hook

Using the flat-nose pliers, gently twist the small loop on the broken or old earring hook sideways (not pulling it apart, that will distort the shape). Sometimes having two pliers can come in handy.  Use one to hold the jump ring and the other to twist the jump ring open.

There are also jump ring openers you can use as well.  Some people love them, for me personally, I've always found them a bit awkward.  If the hook is soldered shut, you may need to use flush cutters to remove it.

Step 3: Attach the New Hook

Slide the earring’s loop or jump ring onto the new earring hook. If using a jump ring, open it the same way as the earring hook—twisting sideways instead of pulling apart.

Step 4: Close the Hook Securely

Use your flat noted pliers to carefully close the loop, ensuring there’s no gap where the earring could slip off.

Step 5: Polish & Wear Your Restored Earrings!

Use a polishing cloth to remove fingerprints and bring back the shine. Enjoy your refreshed earrings—they’ll look brand new!
